On January 15, 1968, a devastating earthquake struck the Belice Valley in Sicily. Gibellina was one of the most affected towns, with almost all of its buildings destroyed and a death toll of 437.
From this tragedy, a story of rebirth emerged, with the reconstruction of the city a few kilometers away from the original site. The new urban center is an example of modern and contemporary architecture, featuring works by some of the most important architects of the 20th century.
What we will see:
- Gibellina Nuova: The new city, designed by Alberto Samonà, Ludovico Quaroni, and Carlo Scarpa, is an open-air museum with works of modern and contemporary art.
- Cretto di Burri: A monumental work by Alberto Burri, created with the remains of the destroyed Gibellina. The Cretto is a symbol of memory and rebirth after the earthquake.
- Montevago: A town in the Belice Valley that preserves an important historical and artistic heritage, including the Montevago Castle and the Mother Church.
